KBU celebrates Innovation Day 2013

In today’s competitive world, it is highly crucial for engineers to be equipped with highly developed innovative skills and able to convert the ideas to common use in order to contribute to the country’s development. Recognising that, KBU International College’s School of Engineering and Computing always encourages its graduates to showcase their innovative idea through their final year projects and the hands on training that is provided to them.

As such, the College celebrated its latest graduating batch from the field of engineering and computing by organising the Innovation Day for the second consecutive year. 

The celebration was specially-designed to showcase some of the students’ finest final-year projects from the field of BEng (Hons) Electrical & Electronic Engineering, BSc (Hons) Information and Communications Technology and BSc (Hons) Software Engineering. 

“Some of the highlights of this year’s Innovation Day would be Design and Implementation of Android Smartphone Universal Remote, Online Manga Rental, Design of Encryption Algorithm for Data Security System Using VHDL Programming, and An Augmented Reality Mobile Classifieds (iOS),” said School of Engineering and Computing Head Lye Boon Han.

He added the Innovation Day 2013 caters as a platform for students to connect with the industry. 

“It is also a channel where students can meet with their potential employers as we have invited more than 40 well-known companies and higher education institution to participate in this year’s celebration,” he said.  

He added: “It is good to see our students come up with innovative projects that rectify common problems which we encounter in our daily lives such as Android Universal Remote, Traffic problems and so on. This will definitely lure industry players who were present during the innovation day to hire them and some students have already been approached by the industry players to join them.”

One of the industry players who were present during the Innovation Day, Jeffery Lee from Emerald Systems also talked highly about the student projects. 

“The projects which were showcased are very impressive and I found the ideas that the students come up with is very different and innovative. With a proper packaging and marketing, the projects can be a hit in the market,” he said. 

Wilson Tham, who designed the Android Smartphone Universal Remote, said that the lecturers were always there to assist them when he faced problems in his project.

The student who designed an application which allows one to easily switch from one device to another was beaming with joy as he was approached by a total of five industry players who were keen to hire him. 

“This is definitely what a student wants; to be hired immediately upon graduation,” he added.

Other than that, the School also encouraged the students by presenting RM1000 each for the best projects which was chosen through 60% of professional assessment and 40% of voting process. 

Student, Eng Lian Xun’s An Augmented Reality Mobile Classifieds (iOS) project was identified as the best project for the Computing category while Kaartigaiyan Gunasegaran and Low Hui Zian were presented with RM1000 for their project which solves traffic problems, Intelligent Traffic Guidance System, under the Engineering category.

Top notch educators in KBU

Henry Brooks Adams once said: “A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops”. How true as teachers have touched many lives in one way or another in a mission to educate and guide us.
 

At KBU International College, the students will definitely be taken through a wholesome educational journey with a mix of lecturers who are selectively picked by the management. The lecturers do not only possess academic credentials of PhD but also have solid industrial experience in fields such as Engineering and Computing.

“The PhD learning experience has shaped and strengthened my analytical skills in research and development.  I am now able to impart my knowledge on research and development to my students,” said Dr Christine Lee, Deputy Head of School of Engineering and Computing.

The lecturer who obtained a doctorate in Intelligent Tutoring System from University Malaya also added that the knowledge she has gained enables her to guide the students through in their final-year projects. 

She said: “We were able to teach the students to improve their analytical skills and encourage them to think out of the box. Not only that, I was also able to teach them on ways to write literature review and develop a competent system”

“For example, most of students were able to demonstrate their final-year projects well during the innovation day which took place last year. Industry players who have visited us on that day also talked highly on our students’ projects,” she added. 

Some of Dr Christine’s research papers which were published would be “Web-based C++ Standard Template Library Intelligent Tutoring System (2005), “Work in Progress: Development of a 3-Tier Architecture C++ STL ITS” and “Bayesian-based Intelligent Tutoring System for Teaching C++ STL. 

KBU International College currently houses 21 PhD holders as part of the workforce. The number is expected to grow gradually in months to come.

6-star achievers of KBU International College

The country would at least need about 200,000 engineers by the year 2020 and engineers in the field of electrics and electronics are becoming one of the most sought after in Malaysia. Recognising the abundant of job opportunities that is surfacing in the field of engineering, KBU’s School of Engineering and Computing is heightening its efforts to meet the demand for skilled and professional engineers.

“We promote a fun-learning atmosphere for students who enroll in the College. The learning process takes a more hands-on approach where students will be exposed with training, workshop and competitions,” said School of Engineering and Computing Head Lye Boon Han.

He said: “I’m proud that the College has an excellent track record in producing first-class students every year without failing. This year, we have seven students who are being awarded the first-class degree from the field of electrics and electronics engineering”. 

“The College produces a very conducive study environment where students can focus on their studies. Other than that, the facilities such as the library, engineering labs which are equipped with modern and up-to-date facilities and computer centre also comes handy for our studies,” said Ng Boon Leong, one of the first-class achievers from the graduating class of 2012. 

He added that the lecturers are approachable and always there when the students need them.

Another first-class student, Samuel Lee Joo Thiam concurred with Ng and said: “KBU does not only focus on academic excellence, but, the students will also be trained accordingly with skills and knowledge needed to face the corporate world.” 

“One should not hesitate in asking questions during lecturers. The lecturers will be more than willing to explain again if we ask,” said Samuel.

Samuel who is thankful for his parents and lecturers also added that perseverance and hard work will always win the game, be it in education or in personal life.

Shine like a star with KBU

Android Smartphone Challenge 2012

It was a moment of joy for Richard Lim Kee Wei- a SPM student from SMK Methodist (ACS) Klang who emerged as the winner for the Android Smartphone Challenge 2012.

The student who created ABC Learning Apps using MIT App Inventor after just two hours of training by KBU lecturers was overjoyed to receive Samsung Galaxy S3- which was the grand prize of the challenge.

Students Ngoh Kai Heong from SMK Tinggi St David and Tan Yi Hao from SMJK Jit Sin walked away with Samsung Galaxy Note and Samsung Galaxy Y for creating Android apps on MyWallet and Emergency Call respectively.

The event which was organised by KBU’s School of Engineering and Computing aimed at giving a glimpse of fun aspects related to the engineering and computing field to the 2012 SPM and UEC students.

The event was organised in conjunction with KBU’s Open Day had attracted participation from students around the nation.

“The Android Smartphone Challenge- is one of our initiatives to promote the fun part of engineering and computing,” said School of Engineering and Computing Head Lye Boon Han.

He added that the field of engineering and computing is often misinterpreted as tough and too technical.

“Recognising the matter we would like to promote fun-learning environment which involves latest equipments and hands-on training that would shape the engineers of tomorrow,” he added.

The event which was filled with fun activities, also saw the launching of KBU App Inventor Malaysia facebook group, aimed to create a platform for technology lovers to come and learn how to create Smartphone apps.

The Facebook group was launched by KBU Principal Dr See Hoon Peow, encouraged students to participate in the Facebook group and learn more on creating Smartphone apps.

During the Android Smartphone Challenge, students were briefed on the Android Smartphone apps and went through a simple test on Smartphone knowledge. Then, top 27 students were selected to take part in the Android Smartphone Challenge while the others went through an exciting training on how to create cool Smartphone apps.
